Happy last day of November!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed place value and money. We worked on problem set 64 which is due on Thursday.

Science: Today we continued our discussion on plants. We discussed the roots and stems. We learned some new words, Xylem and Phloem! A worksheet checking what we discussed today was assigned and is due on Thursday.

Social Studies: Today we continued to discuss explorers, French and English. Hopefully the students are working on their Explorers report.

Spelling: Workbook pages are due tomorrow and the spelling test will be on Friday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we completed our writing prompt and we began the last section of Number the Stars.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Best Christmas Pageant Ever chapter 4.

English/Writing: We discussed fact and opinion and we did a worksheet dealing with this topic.

Elves Workshop will be next Tuesday and each student needs to bring in $1.50 to help with the costs!

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed subtracting fractions and mixed numbers from whole numbers greater then one. Problem set 63 was assigned and is due on Wednesday.

Spelling: The workbook pages 86-89 were assigned and are due on Thursday. We also took our pretest today.

Science: Today we discussed cause and effect and finding these when reading science. We also began discussing plants and photosynthesis from chapter 4 lesson 1 in our science books. Two worksheets were assigned and are due on Wednesday. One was on cause and effect and the other was over the items that we discussed today.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished the reading assignment from Monday and we worked on answering questions over the assigned chapters.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Best Christmas Pageant Ever chapters 2 and 3.

Social Studies: Today we watched a video on the Spanish Explorers.

English/Writing: We did a paragraph correction sheet. (Mr. H's class did the 9 week writing prompt and Mrs. D's class will do this tomorrow!)

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed using letters to name lines, segments, rays and shapes. We also reviewed estimation. Problem set 62 was assigned and is due on Tuesday.

Science: We began chapter 4 dealing with plants. Today with partners we looked up vocabulary words and drew sketches to help us remember the words and their meanings.

Social Studies: We worked on a map of the United States and the location of each state. Also the Explorers report was discussed and a due date of December 19th.

Spelling: We will be working on unit 13 this week. Here are the words:
inform, ornament, disappear, pioneer, important, warmth, serious, forever, reward, appear, perform, force, peer, weary, pier, fortune, career, pierce, formal, enormous. Today we wrote our words three times each. The pretest will be tomorrow.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we looked up vocabulary for our next reading assignment in Number the Stars. We began to read chapters 11-14 today in class.

In Mr. H's class we finished Snow Treasure and we began reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.

Happy Wednesday and Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Here is what we did today:

In Mrs. D's class we worked on completing our Turkey graphs, Tabulate the Turkey, Crack the Code and our reading projects. We also made some turkeys using apples (ask to see your child's picture). The students also took their spelling test and their BIG states and capitols test.

We then had our class store and we worked on budgeting our money. It is fun to see the kids decide what to spend their "money" on. When they do not have enough they must decide what to return to the store. We had a good day and we hope that you have a good holiday!

In Mr. H's class we also took the BIG states and capitols test and a spelling test. The students who did not pass the test will have to take it again next week. We went to the computer lab and had PE. We read from Snow Treasure chapters 25-26. We also had the store with Mrs. Dennie's class.

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today for math we worked on graphing on coordinate plans as we completed an activity called A Real Turkey. We also worked on Tabulate the Turkey as well.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we worked on a Reader's Theater and discussed an activity that we will all be completing after Thanksgiving. Also, our Number the Stars activity and questions are due on Wednesday.

In Mr. H's class we read from Snow Treasure chapters 22-23 and 24. We also had a comprehension worksheet going along with the book.

Spelling: We took a pretest today. Our workbook pages are due on Wednesday and we will have a test on Wednesday as well.

Social Studies: We discussed our explorers report and what we will be required to have. A paper discussing this will be sent home soon. We also did a 50 states and capitals review sheet to help get ready for the BIG test tomorrow.

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed probability and we did a probability experiment. We had a very good discussion. No homework tonight!

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to work on Number the Stars. We are to read through chapter 10 and answer questions that are due on Wednesday.

In Mr. H's room we read from Snow Treasure chapters 19-20 and 21.

Spelling: Here are this weeks words: inform, ornament, disappear, pioneer, important, warmth, serious, forever, reward, appear, perform, force, peer, weary, pier, fortune, career, pierce, formal, enormous
We will have a pretest on Tuesday.
Workbook pages 80-83 are due on Wednesday.
We will take our final test on Wednesday.

Social Studies: The BIG states and capitols quiz is on Wednesday. We will be doing activities all week to help us prepare for this test. We are going to begin discussing details about our Explorers report that will begin after Thanksgiving and be due before we leave for Christmas break.

Science: We worked on problem solving skills by using guess and check and finding a pattern.

Happy Friday and Happy Children's Book Week!

Today we had a read in in the afternoon to celebrate Children's Book Week!
Here is what else we did today:

Math: We took a test today!

Reading: In Mr. H's class we read from Snow Treasure 15-16-17 and 18.
In Mrs. D's class we went to the first grade to work with our buddies and we went to the library.

Spelling: We took our weekly test.

English: In Mr. H's class we had a paragraph correction worksheet to work on .

Social Studies: We took the last states and capitols quiz and the big 50 states and capitols test will be next Wednesday.

Happy Thursday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed subtracting fractions from the whole, and making fractions equal to one. We did problem set 60 and we will have a test on Friday.

Science: Today we finished the video on Albert Einstein (not Thomas Edison) .

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed vocabulary for the next section of Number the Stars and had a discussion about what we have read so far. We also worked on fluency in our reading by working on the poem Smart by Shel Silverstien.

In Mr. H's class we read from Snow Treasure chapters 12-13 and 14.

Social Studies: We had a 13 question quiz over the explorers.
We will have a states and capitals test tomorrow.

English/ Writing: We had a prompt: What would happen if you grew taller than trees.

Spelling: We handed in our workbook pages today and we will have our final test tomorrow.

*We are planning on having a read in tomorrow to celebrate Children's book week. The students will be bringing home more information today!

Happy Wednesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we practiced dividing and writing our quotients as mixed numbers (remainders as fractions.) Problem set 58 was assigned and is due on Thursday.

Science: We began a video on Thomas Edison.

Social Studies: We are getting ready for a quiz over the explorers that we have discussed so far. The quiz will be on Thursday. The students will be allowed to use the charts that they have been completing in class.

Spelling: The spelling book is due on Thursday and a test will happen on Friday.

English/Writing: We did a story starter called: What if you could walk up the walls and across the ceiling.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to discuss Number the Stars and we worked on our choices for the first four chapters.

In Mr. H's class we continued to read and discuss Snow Treasure chapters 9-10 and 11. We also worked on a reading comprehension.

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed simple probability today. We talked about chance and probability and how some items are more likely to happen then others. Problem set 57 was assigned and is due on Wednesday.

Science: Today we took a test over chapter three.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed the first chapters of Number the Stars and we continued to read the next two chapters. A paper was handed out with some questions for the students to answer and a project for them to pick out having to do with the first part of this book.

In Mr. H's class we read from Snow Treasure chapters 6-7 & 8.

Social Studies: We continued to discuss explorers as well as a reading assignment from the new textbook 127-129.

Spelling: We had our pretest and the workbook is due on Thursday.

English/Writing: We had a lesson on prefixes and we had an assignment that is due on Wednesday. We also had a writing assignment describing life in space.

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we worked more on multiplying three digit numbers. We dealt with numbers that have a zero in them today. Problem set 56 was assigned and is due on Tuesday.

Science: Today we reviewed for our test that will be on Tuesday. Pages 84-85, problems 1-8 all, 11, 13, 14-18 all were assigned for Tuesday. We have been discussing the circulatory system, heart, blood etc, the respiratory system, the digestive system, and the urinary system.

Social Studies: The states and capitols for the week are Virginia-Richmond, West Virginia-Charleston, Washington - Olympia, Wisconsin-Madison, Wyoming - Cheyenne. The quiz over the last five will be on Friday.
We continued to discuss the explorers today and also continued to complete our explorer chart.
The BIG complete states and capitols test will be on Wednesday before Thanksgiving

Spelling: We have a review list this week. We wrote our words three times each today for practice! The workbook pages 74-77 are due on Thursday. We will have a pretest tomorrow and a final test on Friday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we began a new book Number the Stars. We discussed some new vocabulary and began a KWL chart about WWII. This is an excellent book and we have already had some great discussions about this topic.

In Mr. H's class we are reading Snow Treasure chapters 3-4 and 5.

English/Writing: We had a prompt: What if cows gave rootbeer instead of milk?

Happy Veterans Day!

We had a program today to honor our Veterans and the choir did a fabulous job performing two wonderful songs.

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took a math test over skills that have been taught so far this year.

Spelling: We took a spelling test and wrote sentences for our words.

Reading: Mrs. D's class had library, art and our first grade buddies today. We did finish the story The People of Sparks! Great book!

Mr. H's class we began a new book Snow Treasure.

Social Studies: We took a states and capitol's quiz.

English/Writing: We had a short writing assignment dealing with both social studies and English.

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed and practiced multiplying three digit by three digit numbers. Problem set 55 was assigned and is due on Friday. We will have a test on Friday.

Science: We discussed the urinary system and reviewed the other systems. We will have a test next Tuesday. Two worksheets were assigned and are due on Monday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed the story of Mae Jameson and worked on main idea and workbook pages 113-114-115 were assigned and are due on Friday.
In Mr. H's class we read from Twenty and Ten.

English/Writing: We worked on verbs past and present tense.

Spelling: Books were turned in and test will be on Friday.

Social Studies: We watched a movie about Christopher Columbus.

Today was an early dismissal day! Also Mr. H was not here today.
Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed dividing by multiples of ten. We did some examples on small marker boards and then we worked on Problem set 54 due on Thursday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read the story about Mae Jameson with a partner. We will be discussing this story tomorrow.

In Mr. H's class we read from the book Twenty and Ten.

Spelling: We did an activity sheet using our spelling words.

Social Studies: We had a Time for Kids magazine.

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed perimeter and measures of a circle. We discussed the vocabulary circumference, radius, diameter, and center. Problem set 53 was assigned and is due on Wednesday.

Science: We began to discuss the digestive system today. A short worksheet dealing with respiration was assigned.

Social Studies: We added some information to our Early Explorer chart: Dias, daGama, Columbus. The students read information from both textbooks.

English/Writing: None today.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we began vocabulary for our new story Mae Jemison Space Scientist. We also read from The People of Sparks.

In Mr. H's class: We began a new book Twenty and Ten chapters one and two.

Spelling: Workbook pages 68-71 were assigned and are due on Thursday.

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We worked on lesson 52 dealing with place value through hundred billions. This is something that students struggle with at times. Problem set 52 is due on Tuesday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished the Mixed Up Files video and we began writing a paper comparing and contrasting the two versions on the story.
In Mr. H's class we read from the Chicken Soup books with a partner.

Spelling: Here are our words for this week: repair, aware, carpet, pardon, guard, remark, scarce, declare, argue, department, vary, prepare, flair, article, farther, regard, area, harvest, despair, flare. The pretest will be on Tuesday. Words were copied three times each for today.

Social Studies: Here are our states and capitals for this week: Rhode Island - Providence, Tennessee - Nashville, Texas - Austin, Utah - Salt Lake City, Vermont - Montpelier. The students were given a reading assignment from their new books discussing early explorers.

Science: We finished our discussion on the respiratory system. The students were given two review pages due on Tuesday.

English/Writing: The students worked on a paragraph correction sheet.

Math: We discussed multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers. Problem set 51 was assigned and is due on Monday:

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we began to watch the video of the Mixed Up Files. We will be comparing the two next week. Also we worked with our 1st grade buddies.

In Mr. H's class we finished Shiloh Season today.

English/Writing: We worked on a paragraph correction sheet.

Social Studies: We took our states and capitals quiz.

Spelling: We took our test over unit 10.

Happy Thursday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took our Six weeks computation test today. We are testing over skills that they should have by the end of 5th grade. We are looking for improvement each time!

Science/Health: We watched a Bill Nye video over the human body. (lub dub lub dub)

Social Studies: Remember that the states and capital test in on Friday. We read from the old textbook discussing the Early Explorers. We started a graphic organizer to keep track of all of the explorers that we will be discussing.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we spent our last day working on finishing the Mixed Up Files book. The AR needs to be taken by tomorrow. An activity was assigned to be completed by Friday.

In Mr. H's class we read from Shiloh Season chapters 11-12-13.

English/Writing: We did a story starter involving the beach and a problem with the weather.

Spelling: The workbook pages were collected and the final test will be on Friday!

Happy Wednesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we did Investigation 5 dealing with analyzing and organizing data. There was a short assignment given as well.

Social Studies: We read from the old textbook discussing Vikings and Marco Polo.

Reading: In Mr. H's class we read from Shiloh Season chapters 8-9 and 10.

In Mrs. D's class we discussed the Mixed Up Flies and began to read the last two chapters of the book. When the book is finished the students are to take the AR test and pick up an activity sheet to complete by Friday.

English/Writing: We worked on paragraph correction sheets.

Spelling: We did an activity worksheet and the workbook is due tomorrow.

Science: Today we began to discuss the respiratory system. We also reviewed the circulatory system as well.
*The end of the grading period is approaching quickly and there are some students who need to read for AR points!

Happy November!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took a math test over what we have learned so far this year.

Science: We discussed the circulatory system, blood and what is in it, blood vessels and what the different types are, and the heart and it's parts. We had a worksheet and a summary sheet to do for Wednesday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to read from the Mixed Up Files chapters 6-8 are due on Wednesday along with the questions answered for that section.
In Mr. H's class we read from Shiloh Season chapter 7.

English/Writing: Pen Pal letters were finished today.

Spelling: We took our pretest today and workbook pages 62-65 were assigned and are due on Thursday.

Social Studies: We began chapter 3 pages 100-103 discussing early explorers.
