Happy Halloween! What a crazy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed finding averages of numbers. Problem set 50 was assigned. We will have a math test on Tuesday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read from the Mixed Up Files. Chapters 6-8 and their questions is due on Wednesday. We also listened to some more of The People of Sparks.

In Mr. H's class we read from Shiloh Season chapters 4 and 5.

Science: Today we did some pumpkin science. We looked at some of the attributes that pumpkins have and thanks to our wonderful PTO each of our 5th graders had a pumpkin to take home today.

Social Studies: Our states and capitals this week are:
New York - Albany, Ohio - Columbus, Oklahoma - Oklahoma City, Oregon - Salem, Pennsylvania - Harrisburg. The quiz over these will be on Friday.

Mrs. D's class took their chapter 2 unit test today.

English/Writing: We worked on our Pen Pal letters today. We also reviewed linking and helping verbs. We had an assignment on this that is due on Tuesday.

Spelling: Unit 10 is this weeks lesson. Pretest Tuesday, book due on Thursday and final test on Friday. Here are this weeks words:

Happy Friday! Go Rockies!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed solving two step story problems and reviewed expanded form as well. Problem set 49 was assigned and is due on Monday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed The Mixed Up Files and we also listened to the People of Sparks. We also visited our first grade buddies and worked with them on reading and math.

In Mr. H's class we read chapter 3 in Shiloh Season and discussed it together.

English/writing: In Mr. H's class we did a Red Ribbon week essay.

Social Studies: We took our states and capitals quiz today. Mr. H's class took their chapter 2 test today and Mrs. D's class will take it on Monday.

Spelling: We took our test and wrote our sentences today.

Happy Thursday!

Mrs. D was not here today, she was at a conference.

Here is what we were supposed to get done today:

Math: We discussed expanded notation and standard numbers. We did problem set 48 and it is due on Friday.

Science: We watched a video on Newton.

Social Studies: We reviewed for our test that will be on Friday.

English/Writing: Review of helping verbs and correction of a paper.

Spelling: We turned in our spelling workbook pages and we will have our test on Friday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to work on The Mixed Up Files and the questions for chapters 4 and 5 that are due on Friday.

In Mr. H's class we continued to read and discuss Shiloh Season.

Happy Wednesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed solving story problems with fractions of groups and we also took measurements and converted them into smaller units. Problem set 47 was assigned and is due on Thursday.

Science: We began to discuss chapter 3 lesson 1 the circulatory system.

English/Writing: We discussed helping verbs and did an assignment that is due on Thursday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to read from the Mixed Up Files. Chapters 4 and 5 are to be completed with the questions answered by Friday.

In Mr. H's class we began reading Shiloh Season.

Social Studies: We completed chapter #2 and we will be having a test over chapter 2 on Friday.

Spelling: Workbooks are due on Thursday. We also did an in class activity today with our spelling words.

Happy Tuesday!

Mrs. D made it out of the hurricane without any problems except for a bumpy ride out! Everyone is back where they should be today!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took a math test today!

Science/Health: We did a short experiment on the pulse. We had an assignment on sequence of events and we began looking at the vocabulary for chapter 3 in our science books.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we began a new book yesterday called "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler". We read the first three chapters and answered questions that went along with these chapters.
In Mr. H's class we read from Chicken Soup for the Kids Soul and discussed the stories

Social Studies: We discussed today about Rosa Parks and we also read pages 81-85 about the Plain Indians.

Spelling: Workbook pages 56-59 were assigned and are due on Thursday. Also the pretest was given.

English/Writing: The main verb and helping verb lesson was taught today and parts A and B are due on Wednesday.

Happy Monday!

Mrs. D was not here today so the blog will not be complete until Tuesday when she hopefully returns!

Here is what we completed today:

Reading: In Mr. H's class we read from Chicken Soup for Kid's Soul. We also completed a reading comprehension worksheet. In Mrs. D's class we continued to read and discuss The People of Sparks.

English/Writing: In Mr. H's class we completed a writing activity titled The Beach Party.

Science/Health: In Mrs. D.'s class we took our first Health test over chapter 1.

Happy Tuesday!

Today is the last full day of the week!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed measuring with a centimeter ruler and a standard inch ruler. We practiced measuring with both types and we worked on problem set 44 for homework.

Science/Health: In Mr. H's class we took a test over chapter 1 in health. In Mrs. D's class we reviewed for the test and will take it tomorrow!

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished reading the story The Fear Place and we answered four questions at the end of the story.
In Mr. H's class we continued to discuss our compare and contrast of the movie and the book The Mixed Up Files.

Social Studies: We retook the last states and capitals quizzes and we also learned about East Coast capitals.

English/Writing: We worked on paragraph corrections.

Spelling: We took our final test on the word that we chose and also dictation.

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed dividing and writing our quotients using mixed numbers. We also continued to discuss adding and subtracting fractions, mixed numbers and whole numbers with common denominators. Problem set 43 was assigned and is due on Tuesday.

Science/Health: Mrs. D's class is a little behind so they caught up from Thursday and finished discussing lesson 6 and they have a worksheet that is due on Tuesday. The test for Mrs. D's class will be on Wednesday.
Mr. H's class reviewed for the test and were assigned page 51 (1-15 all and 16,17,22,23) due on Tuesday. They will take their test on Tuesday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed the vocabulary for The Fear Place and we read the first section in class. We also continued with The People of Sparks as our discussion and read aloud book.

In Mr. H's class we are comparing the book version to the video version of The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. The students had to write a comparison paper describing the similarities+ and differences of the movie and the book.

English/Writing: The students wrote about their feelings on how things are going so far this year.

Spelling: Mrs. D's class list is: thankfulness, usefulness, national, Halloween, homework, broccoli, stadium, varsity, cinnamon, New Orleans. The words that were missed from the pretest were copied three times each for homework.

Mr. H's class list is Halloween, scarecrow, literature, illustrated, government, educational, October, community, rehearsal, celebrate.

Both classes took a pretest today and will take a final test on Tuesday.

*Parent Teacher conferences are today and tomorrow. Do not forget that students are dismissed at 10:45 on Wednesday and Thursday with no school on Friday! Have a great evening!

Happy Friday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed divisibility rules for 3,6 and 9 and we also practiced short division. Problem set 42 was assigned and is due on Monday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed LaBamba and did page 176 questions 2,3,4 and 6. We also worked with our first grade buddies today!

In Mr. H's class we finished From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. We also took the AR test over this book.

Spelling: We took a test over chapter 8 and we also worked on giving words for our list for next week. Our words for next week will be: thankfulness, usefulness, national, Halloween, homework, broccoli, stadium, varsity, cinnamon, New Orleans. There will be a pretest on Monday and a posttest on Tuesday.

Social Studies: We took our states and capitals test today. The students who passed this weeks list will have no states and capitals next week. Those who did not pass will retake the test on Tuesday.

Happy Thursday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We reviewed how to add and subtract fractions with common denominators as well as mixed numbers with common denominators. Problem set 41 was assigned and is due on Friday.

Science/Health: We discussed resolving conflicts and discussed the vocabulary that went along with this lesson. A review worksheet was assigned and is due on Friday.

Spelling: The workbook pages for lesson 8 were due today and we will have a test over unit 8 on Friday.

Social Studies: Reminder that the next states and capitals quiz will be on Friday! Also we read from the new textbook pages 74-80 discussing the early Eskimo tribes

Reading: In Mrs. D's room we finished the story LaBamba and we completed the vocabulary and comprehension workbook pages 83-85-86-87 and they are due on Friday.

In Mr. H's room we read from the Mixed Up Files up to page 142.

English/Writing: Linking verbs worksheet. Pen pal letters are due tomorrow without exception. They also had to do a word list from A-z about what homework is...

Happy Wednesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We did an investigation today dealing with using protractors. We practiced measuring angles and making angles using our protractors. The students also worked on a math sheet reviewing multiplication.

Science/Health: The students presented their information on one of the five uncomfortable feelings. The completed a worksheet about these feelings as the groups presented.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read the first part of the story LaBamba from our reading books.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Mixed Up Files finished chapter 8 and began chapter 9.

Social Studies: We discussed from the old textbook lessons 1 and 2 about the Aztecs, Incas, and the Mayans.

Spelling: Workbook pages are due tomorrow.

English/writing: We did a story started titled Last Year. We also worked with linking verbs with a worksheet due tomorrow.

We had fire prevention today and the students were visited by a firefighter from Plymouth. We all went through the fire safe house and discussed what we would do in the case of a fire.

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took a test today!

Science/Health: We worked in groups to discuss uncomfortable feelings like grief, boredom, loneliness, shyness and anger. The students will present their findings tomorrow.

Social Studies: We discussed lesson 3 of chapter 2 dealing with early civilizations.

English/ Writing: We discussed linking verbs and had an assignment to complete for tomorrow. For writing we wrote about when I am 18...

Spelling: The workbook pages were assigned, pages 50-53 these are due on Thursday. The pretest was today and the final test will be on Friday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we worked on our Running Out of Time projects in the computer lab. We also discussed vocabulary for our new story LaBamba.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Mixed Up Files chapter 8.

Happy Columbus Day!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed lesson 40 dealing with writing quotients using mixed numbers. Lesson 40 was assigned and is due tomorrow. We will also have a test tomorrow.

Science/Health: We discussed actions, reactions and stress today. The students have a worksheet reviewing vocabulary words that is due tomorrow.

Spelling: Unit 8 words were introduced today. Here is the list for the week: humble, angel, council, pupil, final, normal, angle, syllable, festival, panel, evil, rural, fossil, scramble, marvel, loyal, general, parcel, civil, counsel. The students wrote their words three times each for tomorrow.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to work on our Running Out of Time projects that are due on Friday. We also began a new book the sequel to the City of Embers, The People of Sparks we are excited to see what happens to our favorite characters.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Mixed Up Files chapter 7.

Social Studies: Our states and capitals this week are Michigan - Lansing, Minnesota - Saint Paul, Mississippi - Jackson, Missouri - Jefferson City, Montana - Helena. We read lesson three from chapter 2 today pages 70-73. This section dealt with the southwest desert tribes.

English/Writing: We continued to finish pen pal letters.

Happy Friday!

Here is what we did today!

Math: We worked on problem set 39 dealing with comparing fractions using pictures. Problem set 39 was assigned and is due on Monday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed our final projects for Running Out of Time. These choice projects are due next Friday!

In Mr. H's class we continued to read from The Mixed Up Files.

Spelling: We took our test over unit 7.

Social Studies: We took our states and capitals quiz.

The rest of the time today we had our classroom store. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn about different aspects of our economy. The store has some great items and the prices vary! The kids had a great time spending their class money!

Happy Thursday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed using fraction pictures and also naming mixed numbers on a number line. We did problem set 38 for homework.

Science/Health: We discussed friends and feelings in lesson 3 of chapter one of our health book. We added four new words to our vocabulary list.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we took an AR quiz over Stink Alley the read aloud that we just finished. We also took a quiz over chapters 16-20 in Running Out of Time. We will finish the book soon and have a choice of projects to complete.

In Mr. H's class we read the beginning of chapter 5 pages 67-81. We also did a reading vocabulary sheet.

Social Studies: We are working on the vocabulary for lesson 1 chapter 2 pages 56-59. The students were assigned to read pages 62-67. Remember that states and capitals test 5 is tomorrow.

English/writing: We discussed action verbs and parts A and B of the worksheet were assigned. We wrote a story about "The Shed...". Also, some continued to work on Pen Pal letters.

Spelling: We turned in workbook pages for lesson 7. The test is tomorrow.

Happy Wednesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed lesson 36 dealing with triangles. We talked about naming triangles by their sides and angles. Our assignment was problem set 36.

Science/Health: We discussed lesson 2 dealing with goal setting.

Spelling: Workbook pages for lesson 7 are due on Thursday.

Social Studies: We worked on letters so we did not have time for social studies today.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to read from Running Out of Time. We will have a quiz over chapters 16-20 tomorrow. We also wrote two quiz questions of our own and the answers.

In Mr. H's class we concluded chapter 4 of the mixed up files. We had computer time today so our reading time was cut short.

English/Writing: We received our first pen pal letters and they came with pictures! We started working on writing back to our pen pals. The final copies of these letters should be completed by Friday.

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took a test and a pretest .

Science/Health: We began to discuss chapter one in health about having a healthy self concept.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we had a quiz over chapters 11-15 in Running Out of Time and we began to read the next set of chapters. Chapters 16-20 due on Thursday. They are also working on filling out a graphic organizer dealing with our book.

In Mr. H's class we continued to read from the mixed up files chapter 4 today.

Social Studies: We discussed the vocabulary for prehistoric times today.

English/Writing: Today the students wrote about something that they experienced on a trip. Mr. H's class completed the unit review.

Spelling: Unit 7 workbook pages 44-47 are due on Thursday. Pretest was today and final test will be on Friday.

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We worked on lesson 35 dealing with elapsed time story problems. We did problem set 35 for homework and we will have a test tomorrow.

Science/ Health: None today.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we worked on reading chapters 11-15 in Running Out of Time. We will have a quiz tomorrow.

In Mr. H's class we read from The Mixed Up Files chapter 3.

Social Studies: States and capitals this week are: Kentucky - Frankfort, Louisiana - Baton Rouge, Maine-Augusta, Maryland-Annapolis, Massachusetts - Boston. We watched a video over the states and capitals.

Spelling: We wrote our words three times each. Here are our words this week: shadow, cheap, social, motion, bunch, nature, publish, ancient, picture, shelter, special, delicious, chest, official, exchange, shoulder, patient, kitchen, furniture, pasture.

English/ Writing: We did a unit review in English. We wrote a letter telling our favorite subject.
