Happy last day of August!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We worked on lesson 18 dealing with division facts. Problem set 18 was assigned and is due on Thursday.

Science: We discussed classifying shapes and how this was very similar to classifying animals. We had a short worksheet dealing with triangles. Today we had a math and science connection.

Reading: In Mrs. D's room we discussed Eye of the storm and worked on writing comprehension answers in complete sentences. We also worked on comprehension skills while reading another short story.
In Mr. H's class we went back to reading Tall Tales - Johnny Appleseed pages 77-87.

English: We had a quiz paper 104 A and B covering common and proper nouns. We also wrote a essay on what we would do if we were president for the day.

Social Studies: We continued to discuss chapter one on climate and the students were assigned to read pages 33-39.

Spelling: Workbooks are due tomorrow! Test on Friday!

Happy Tuesday!

We think that the fall illnesses are creeping in. Make sure your child is getting plenty of rest at night and remind them drink lots of liquids.

Here is what we did today:

Math: We worked on lesson 18 dealing with multiplying three factors. Problem set 18 was assigned and is due on Wednesday. We will be taking our first math test on Friday.

Science: We continued to read from the leveled readers gaining more of an understanding on classification. We will have a test over chapter one on Friday.

Social Studies: We continued to look at chapter one on the landforms of the earth.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished our story called Eye of the Storm and we completed workbook pages 24-25-26-27 dealing with comprehension and main ideas.
In Mr. H's class we continued to read from the Hurricane book pages 9-37.

Spelling: We took a pretest and the workbook pages 14-15-16-17 were assigned and are due on Thursday.

English/Writing: We worked on paragraph corrections.

Happy Monday!

We hope you had a great weekend! Here is what we did in school today:

Math: We worked on problem set 17 dealing with multiplication of 2-3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. There are a few students still struggling with their multiplication facts ask your child if he/she knows their facts. Problem set 17 is due tomorrow.

Science: We read from some leveled readers dealing with classification. This is just another way to present the material on classifying. We did this in class and will continue tomorrow.

English: We worked on our quotation worksheet. We also worked on an essay on the person we admired the most.

Social Studies: We used this time for extra writing time.

Spelling: We will be working on unit 2 this week. Here are the words:
arrive, slope, growth, locate, design, supply, chosen, type, froze, polite, spoken, tone, describe, silent, thrown, deny, excite, bowl, style, decide. We will take a pretest on these words tomorrow.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed vocabulary dealing with our next story and added these words to our vocabulary notebooks. We listened to a story about hurricanes and we discussed the current hurricane happening in the south. We read the first section of our new story Eye of the Storm. We worked on worksheet 23 and part of 24.
In Mr. H's class we read from a book about hurricanes pages 6-18.

Happy Friday!

Our first full week is now complete and we are all in full swing! We hope that your students are happily adjusting to their school schedule.

Here is what we did today:

Math: We worked on problem set 16 dealing with story problems with subtraction.

Science: We discussed lesson four in chapter one dealing with classifying plants. We had a short worksheet to complete at the end of our discussion.

Spelling: We took our first final test over unit 1 spelling words.

English: We turned in our pen pal letters.

Social Studies: We watched a video on landforms.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished our read aloud Just Juice and had a good discussion. We also had a comprehension she called Do or Die that is due on Monday.
In Mr. H's class we read Tall Tales pages 24-36 from a new paperback book. As a follow up we watched a video on Pecos Bill.

Happy Thursday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We began working in our textbooks today. We worked on lesson 15 Multiplication. We completed multiplication charts and worked on problem set 15 that is due on Friday.

Science: We discussed lesson 3 of chapter 1 on Invertebrates. We had a worksheet to complete that is due on Friday.

Spelling: Our books were graded and we have our final test on Friday.

English: We discussed worksheet 32 and 33 on character, setting and plot and are to complete it for Friday. The pen pal letters are due tomorrow!

Social Studies: We finished reading in our books on map skills.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we answered questions 2,4, 5 and 6 on page 46 of our textbook over Earthquake Terror and we worked on a story about Jayne Goodall. These are due on Friday.
In Mr. H's class we read Tall Tales from our textbook pages 109-118. We also worked on a comprehension sheet called Joe Barbera.

Happy Wednesday!

We have officially made it one week! The kids are settling into the routines of everyday life in fifth grade. We hope the teachers get settled soon :)!
Here is what we did today:

Math: We did Investigation 1 from our book today together in class. We were talking about math stories and how we only need two pieces of the story to solve the problem.

Science: We discussed lesson 2 from chapter 1 about classifying vertebrates. We had a good discussion and the students have a worksheet on what we discussed that is due on Thursday.

Spelling: Workbooks are due tomorrow!

Social Studies: We continued our discussion on maps and the students are to read pages 24-25 in their textbooks

English: We did an activity in class on predicates. Our pen pal letters should be complete by Friday. We also did a paragraph correction worksheet.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished the Earthquake Terror story from our textbook and we worked on pages 5-6 and 7 from our reading workbooks.
In Mr. H's class we read a new story from the textbook Volcanoes on pages 85-98.

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took our final beginning of the year pretest. We will working in our book tomorrow! Start looking for math to come home!

Science: We began working of lesson 1 of chapter one of classifying living things. We began our class with looking up vocabulary for this chapter and checking what we know with some agree and disagree statements. We discussed lesson one and had a worksheet to complete for Wednesday.

Social Studies: We began discussing pages 17-23 and the students were to read it for tomorrow.

English: We worked in class on subjects. We peer edited our pen pal letters. We will finish our letters tomorrow.

Spelling: We took a pretest on unit one. Unit one workbook pages 8, 9 and 10 was assigned and is due on Thursday. Final test is on Friday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we did some listening comprehension to a story about the SS Newman. We also discussed our vocabulary for our new story Earthquake Terror . We began reading the first section of the story pages 30-35 and we worked on workbook pages 3 and 4 on vocabulary and sequencing.
In Mr. H's class we finished Eye of the Storm and we answered questions 1, 2 and 5 and the end of the story.

Happy First Monday!

We hope you had a relaxing weekend. We are ready to get things really rolling this week.

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took another pretest and should be ready to begin in the book soon.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we did some reading strategy work with a read aloud from our textbook. The students also partner read a story about Jessica McClure and did some comprehension activities individually. If this did not get finished in class it is homework.
In Mr. H's class we talked about our new story "Eye of the Storm" and we read and discussed pages 57-68.

Science: We did our first activity on classification. Ask your student about the bean activity. We also had a reading and comparing assignment on spiders and lizards that is due tomorrow.

Spelling: We started working on unit one spelling words. We copied our words three times each for practice. Here are our words for this week:
operate, claim, needle, beneath, foggy, gasoline, eighty, freight, complete, scary, neighbor, daily, screen, police, explain, feature, straight, memory, contain, populate.
We will have a pretest on Tuesday and a final test on Friday.

Social Studies: We began discussing chapter 1 lesson one on the landscape of the US.

English: We did page nine in the book in class parts A and B on complete subjects and predicates.

Happy Friday!

We have had a great first week of school! You have delightful children and we are enjoying getting to know them.

Here is what we have accomplished today:

Math: We took another pretest. Wow do we have some math students. We will be starting in the book soon. Once we have an idea of where everyone is we will be ready to determine if we will have an accelerated group.

Science: We took a look at the first part of our brand new science books. We have a lot of things to cover this year in science!

Social Studies: We began to look at what we will cover this year in social studies. We will began chapter one on Monday.

English/Writing: We worked on an assignment in class on the different types of sentences. We also were to complete our rough draft of our pen pal letters.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we worked on a paper on Puerto Rico. We read some together as a class and some as partners and also worked independently to complete the assignment. Most of the students finished this in class. If they did not then it was assigned as homework!
In Mr. H's class we read Earthquake Terror in our reading books pages 36-44. We were to answer questions 1,2 and 5 on page 46.

Happy Thursday!

We just completed a very busy day! We continued to go over procedures and getting to know you activities.

We handed out assignment books/student planners to each child. Please ask your student to show you their new assignment book. We will use these daily as a way to get the kids used to writing down assignments. We are working to prepare them for next year!

In math today we took a pretest. We may take another one tomorrow depending on the scores of today's test.

In English, we did an in class page on sentence recognition. We wrote our rough drafts of our first pen pal letters.


In Mr. H's class, we began reading Earthquake Terror in our reading textbooks.

As far as assignments today, Mrs. D's class just needs to have their books signed.

Wednesday, August 17th

Happy first day of school!

We hope that your child had a good first day of fifth grade. We both spent a good portion of the day going over "rules/procedures/expectations" We also did some get to know you activities.

For Mr. H's class there was no homework except those who did not finish their "Get to know you" papers. Textbooks were just passed out at the end of the day.

In Mrs. D's class a "Brown Bag" assignment was sent home and should come back tomorrow.

A lot of the foundation has been laid for a great year. We will begin digging into our subject areas soon!
