Happy last day of September!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We completed the six weeks computation test today. No Homework!

Science: We did not have science today.

Social Studies: We took our states and capitals quiz and we looked at a Time for Kids magazine. We also watched a short video on digging up dinosaur bones.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we took a quiz over Running Out of Time chapters 6-10. We discussed the book so far and we began to read chapters 11 and 12. We also visited our first grade buddies today.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Mixed up Files pages 15-24.

English/Writing: We did not have time for this today due to the video.

Spelling: We took a spelling test over unit 6.

Happy Thursday!

We hope that you are having a pleasant start to your fall! Here is what we did today!

Math: We worked on lesson 34 dealing with dividing with zeros in the quotient. The students worked on problem set 34 and it is due on Friday.

Science: We took a science test over chapter 2. The students had study guides that were very complete so they should do well on this test.

Social Studies: We looked at the old textbook pages 70-75. We were discussing prehistoric civilizations. Our states and capitals test will be tomorrow.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed Running Out of Time and the students completed their reading assignments of chapters 6-10. They also did a writing activity dealing with what they have read so far. They will have a quiz over chapters 6-10 tomorrow.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Mixed Up Files. We read pages 1-15.

English/Writing: In Mrs. D's class we wrote a message to living beings on another planet telling them about us.
In Mr. H's class we revisited possessive nouns.

Spelling: The spelling workbooks were turned in and we will have our test on Friday.

Happy Wednesday!

Mrs. D was not here today. She was home with a sick child! Hopefully, she will be back tomorrow!

Here is what we were suppossed to do today:

Math: We took our six weeks computation test today. This is a very hard test and each time the students take it they do better on it. This test is looking at computation skills that the students are to have by the end of fifth grade.

Science: We read a National Geographic for Kids and did a vocabulary sheet dealing with this.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we took a quiz over Running Out of Time chapters 1-5. We started to read chapters 6-10. This is a great book. Ask your child about it!

In Mr. H's class we introduced a new story The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

English /Writing: We did an activity on following directions and we created a story about life in the big city using student chosen vocabulary.

Spelling: We did an activity to review our words. Our workbooks are due tomorrow and the test is on Friday.

Social Studies: We discussed prehistoric civilizations by reading from an old social studies textbook.

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed angles, polygons and reviewed how to round numbers. The students were assigned problem set 33 due on Wednesday.
Science: We reviewed chapter 2 and did a study guide to get us ready for our test which will be on Thursday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to read in our book Running Out of Time. We will have a quiz over the first five chapters tomorrow.

In Mr. H's class we finished the Wishgiver and we did a writing activity writing a new chapter, We also did an illustration for the book

English/Writing: We did a journal entry about friends. We completed the possessive noun sheet

Spelling: Our workbook pages 38-41 are due on Thursday. We also took a pretest today.

Social Studies: We discussed pages 58-59 and the students are to write the vocabulary words.

Happy Monday!

We are back to our normal schedule!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed lesson 31 on pairs of lines. The students were assigned problem set 31 due on Tuesday.

Science: We discussed lesson 3 from chapter 2 on organ systems. We discussed the muscular and skeletal systems. The students had a worksheet covering the information that we discussed today and it is due on Tuesday.

Social Studies: Our next states and capital quiz will be over the following states: Idaho - Boise, Illinois - Springfield, Indiana - Indianapolis, Iowa - Des Moines, Kansas - Topeka. The quiz will be on Friday. Today we began chapter two dealing with early civilizations pages 56-57. The students are to record the first four vocabulary words from this lesson.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we began a new book, running Out of Time. This is an excellent book and we will have great discussions during the reading of the book. The students are to read the first 5 chapters and be ready for a quiz on Wednesday. This book has some similarities to The City of Ember which we finished reading last week.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Wishgiver pages 149-162.

English: We discussed possessive nouns We did a worksheet that is due on Tuesday. In Mr. H's class we did a journal writing over if my teacher and I would switch places for a day.

Spelling: For spelling this week we have a review unit over the first five lists. The workbook will be due on Thursday. Today they copied the spelling words twice.

Happy Friday!

We made it through a tough week of testing! Today we had a little celebration! Here is what we did today:

Math: Each class learned the Product Game! This game works on logic as well as multiplication skills.

Spelling: We took a test over this weeks words and turned in our workbooks.

Social Studies: We took our third states and capital quiz.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we did a comprehension sheet titled Running for the Gold. In Mr. H's class we read the Wishgiver and created our own quizzes and we tested each other over them.

Happy Wednesday!

Two days of ISTEP down and one to go! The students have been doing a great job working on these tests. This is a tough week for all but we are doing well handling it.

In Mrs. D's class we had music this morning and we went to the computer lab. We listened to our book called The City of Ember and we learned a new math game.

In Mr. H's class we had P.E. and we took tests for the rest of the day!

Happy Tuesday!

Today was our first day of testing here in the 5th grade! We tested for more than three hours today. So, there was not a lot of time for other things today. Here is what we did: In Mrs. D's class we went to P.E. and we listened to our book The City of Ember's which we had a great discussion on.

Reminder that spelling books are due on Friday as well as our states and capitals quiz!


In Mr. H's class we went to music this morning and we read some as well.

* This was a long quiet day! The students did a nice job staying quiet and being courteous of others during this test. One day down and two to go!

Happy Monday!

This is our ISTEP testing week! We begin our tests on Tuesday! Here is what we did today:

Math: We did Investigation 3 from our book dealing with 1/3, 1/5 and 1/8 fractions and the corresponding percents. There was no assignment.

Science: In Mrs. D's class we reviewed our discussion on tissues and organs and did a worksheet reviewing vocabulary and on using pictures with science. These are both due on Tuesday.

In Mr. H's class we watched the Bill Nye video that the other class watched on Friday on muscles and bones.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to read and discuss The City of Ember. Wow what a cool book! We also worked on a paper titled Shipwrecked in Antarctica. This paper dealt with a word study, comprehension and finding facts. This is due on Tuesday.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Wishgiver pages 106-118.

English/Writing: In Mr. H's class we did a writing prompt titled the clueless job. In Mrs. D's class we did a self evaluation writing prompt over how this year is going so far.

Spelling: We will be working on lesson 5 this week. Here are the words:
magic, credit, exist, deposit, staff, direct, splendid, business, sense, discuss, contest, building, swift, interest, exact, promise, habit, thus, active, solve. The book will be due on Friday this week as well as the test.

Social Studies: Our states and capitals to know this week are: South Dakota - Pierre, Delaware - Dover, Florida - Tallahassee, Georgia - Atlanta, Hawaii - Honolulu. The quiz over these will be on Friday.

Math: We discussed using fractions and percents from lesson 30 in our books. Problem set 30 was assigned due on Monday.

Science: We watched a Bill Nye video on muscles in Mrs. D's class. Mr. H's class did not have science today and will see the video next week.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we had library, went to visit our first grade buddies, and read from our City of Ember book. No Homework.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Wishgiver pages 87-103.

Spelling: We took our lesson 4 test.

Social Studies: We took our states and capital quiz and turned in our vocabulary for chapter one. We also took our test over chapter 1.

English/writing: In Mr. H's class we had a writing prompt over how we feel the year is going so far. In Mrs. D's class we did not have time to complete English today.

Happy Thursday!

Mr. H and Mrs. D had a meeting this afternoon so hopefully all went well for our guest teachers! Here is what was to hoped today:

Math: We worked on lesson 29 dealing with multiplying by multiples of 10 and 100. Problem set 29 was assigned and is due on Friday.

Science: In Mrs. D's class we read and discussed lesson 2 of chapter 2. Students were given a review worksheet dealing with this lesson as well.

In Mr. H's class we worked on vocabulary for lesson 3 and we did a science in pictures paper dealing with tissues and a vocabulary review sheet as well.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished reading the Michelle Kwan story and we worked on some workbook pages 63-67 dealing with vocabulary, comprehension and facts and opinions.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Wishgiver pages 75-86.

Social Studies: Reminder that our next states and capital test is tomorrow! We reviewed chapter one today to get ready for our first test which will be tomorrow!

Spelling: We handed in our workbook pages and we will have our test on Friday.

English/Writing: We did a writing prompt on the funniest person we know. We also worked on abbreviations today and have an assignment dealing with that as well.

Happy Picture Day!

We all smiled pretty for our pictures today! Our schedule was a bit messed up today due to a number of items!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We took a pretest on problem solving. Problem solving is a focus area for us this year and the students worked on their own to solve four problems.

Science: In Mr. H's class we discussed tissues and organs and did a worksheet dealing with lesson 2 chapter 2. In Mrs. D's class Mrs. Bendy came to talk with us and we ran out of time we will catch up tomorrow.

Social Studies: We are reading pages 44-49 dealing with where people live and work. This is lesson 5 of chapter 1. The students worked on the vocabulary for this lesson. We are close to the end of the chapter and a test is coming soon.

Spelling: Workbooks are due tomorrow.

English/Writing: In Mr. H's class we did a writing dealing with our reading book the Wishgiver.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we worked on vocabulary for our new story Michelle Kwan, Heart of a Champion. We began to read this story as well. Ask your child about this neat story!

In Mr. H's class we read in the Wishgiver pages 60-71.

*In Mrs. D's class we went to the computer lab for the first time and we worked on the Cornerstone program.

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We discussed reading scales including thermometers, and number lines. Problem set 28 was assigned and is due on Wednesday. Tomorrow we will be taking a problem solving pretest that everyone in our grade level is taking. Problem solving is one of our focus areas this year.

Science: We continued to review items from the fourth grade science standards to get ready for the science portion of the ISTEP.

Social Studies: Due to a fire drill we did not have enough time to complete. Students need continue to study for the states and capitals quiz that will be on Friday.

English/Writing: We did a writing prompt on what was your favorite toy. We worked on proper nouns and capitalization and did a worksheet that is due on Wednesday.

Spelling: We took a pretest over lesson 4 and our workbook pages 26-27-28 and 29 are due on Thursday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to read tall tales and discuss what exaggerated events are. We also continued to work on the Vietnamese Holiday comprehension worksheet. We are also very excited about our new book that we are reading called The City of Ember ask your child about this great Young Hoosier Book!

In Mr. H's class we did test read's to get ready for ISTEP.

Happy Monday! We hope that you had a relaxing weekend!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We worked on division today and the students were assigned problem set 26 due on Tuesday.

Science: We looked up our vocabulary for lesson 2 in chapter 2. We did a science in pictures worksheet dealing with cells. We also began to do some review activities for ISTEP! This is a year when Science is tested on ISTEP!

Social Studies: The states and capitals quiz will be on Friday and here are this weeks states and capitals: North Carolina - Raleigh, South Carolina - Columbia, Colorado - Denver, Connecticut - Hartford, North Dakota - Bismark. Today we also worked on vocabulary for pages 33-39 from our textbook.

English/Writing: We worked on proper and common nouns and we had a worksheet looking at this. We also did a writing prompt over hamburger!

Spelling: We will be working with the words from lesson 4 this week. We will have a pretest on Tuesday. Here are this weeks words: LAUNCH, SHAWL, FALSE, AUTHOR, INSTALL, LOSS, BROAD, AUDIENCE, DRAWING, CAUTION, LAWYER, RECALL, ASTRONAUT, OFFICE, SCALD, AUTOMOBILE, DRAWN, BROTH, AWFUL, FLAW. The workbook will be due on Thursday with a final test on Friday!

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read two tall tale stories one about Paul Bunyon and one about John Henry. The students worked on exaggerating characters of their own and finding exaggerations in the stories. The students also began working on a comprehension worksheet dealing with Vietnamese Holiday's that is due on Wednesday.

In Mr. H's class we read from the Wishgiver pages 57-60. We also did some preparation for the ISTEP.

We have had a pretty good week! We are learning a lot! Here is what we did today:

Math: We took a math test today! No homework!

Science: We watched a Bill Nye video on Cells. These videos have such good information and the students enjoy them.

Spelling: We took a test over lesson 3.

English/Writing: In Mr. H's class we did a writing activity dealing with respecting adults.

Social Studies: We took our first States and Capitals quiz. We also read about hurricanes in our Time for Kids magazine.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we went to the library, met our first grade buddies and listened to our new story The City of Ember we are having some great discussions about this book. Our prediction skills and inferences skills are getting better and better!

In Mr. H's class we continued reading the Wishgiver pages 44-56.

Happy Thursday!

We hope you are having a great week! We have been very busy today!
Here is what we did today:

Math: We worked on lesson 25 dealing with factors. Ask your student what Mrs. D taught them today to help remember the difference between factors and multiples. Problem set 25 was assigned and we will have a test on Friday.

Science: We discussed lesson 1 on chapter 2 on what is inside of a cell? The students were given a worksheet reviewing vocabulary and what we discussed today as well as a worksheet working on drawing conclusions.

Social Studies: We will have our first states and capitals quiz on Friday. Here are the five states and capitals: Alabama - Montgomery, Alaska - Juneau, Arizona- Phoenix, Arkansas - Little Rock, California - Sacramento. We will be having a quiz over five states and capitals at a time with a test over all 50 when we finish the list. We also finished our vocabulary for lessons 1 and 2.

English: We discussed singular and plural nouns and we did a worksheet dealing with this as well.

Spelling: We handed in our workbook pages and we will take our post test over lesson 3 on Friday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished our story on Volcanoes and we did workbook pages 38-39-40 dealing with vocabulary and comprehension. We started a new read aloud book today called the City of Ember and it is a pretty good book!

In Mr. H's class we read from the Wishgiver pages 28-44 and we did a comprehension worksheet titled Jermaine Gardner.

Happy Wednesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: We worked on lesson 23 and 24 dealing with fractions equal to one half, order of operations and the Associative Property. The students were assigned problem set 24 due on Thursday.

English: We talked about quotations and had a worksheet to complete for tomorrow.

Spelling: We took a pretest on lesson 3 and our book is due tomorrow.

Science: We looked up our vocabulary words for chapter 2 lesson one and looked at pictures of each word. We also discussed a reading/science skill of making conclusions and inferring. We had a worksheet on this that is due tomorrow.

Social Studies: We recorded our vocabulary words for lessons 1 and 2 making sure that we marked the page number, wrote a definition in our own words and an example.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we recorded our vocabulary for our new story Volcanoes and we began to read the first section of our story. We also finished our read aloud Small Steps. Ask your child about this wonderful book.
In Mr. H's class we read in the Wishgiver pages 19-27. We did a comprehension reading sheet titled Ricky Davis.

Happy Tuesday!

We hope that you survived your Blueberry Weekend (in other areas what they refer to as Labor Day Weekend!)

We have some tired kids but we are working them hard :)

Here is what we did today:

Math: We talked about lesson 22, division with remainders. We also did an investigation dealing with 1/2's, 1/4's and 1/10's. The students were assigned problem set 22 due on Wednesday

English: We wrote a essay on the topic "What would you do if you were walking on the clouds?"

Science: We did an experiment dealing with what yeast cells need to grow. Ask your child what it is that they do need to grow.

Social Studies: We discussed more of chapter 1 and students are to read pages 40-43 on landforms.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read from the Hurricane book and the students each wrote a paragraph describing what they had learned.
In Mr. H's class we began reading the Wishgiver pages 1-16. We wrote a paragraph detailing their own wish.

Spelling: We are working on lesson 3. The pretest will be on Wednesday. Here are our new words:
humid, remove, prove, costume, rescue, unit, annual, suit, include, continue, future, beauty, movies, value, humor, museum, avenue, produce, amuse, youth. The students are to write their spelling words three times each for Wednesday. The workbook pages 20-23 is due on Thursday.

Happy Blueberry Festival!

Here is what we did with your very excited kids today:

Math: We took a test over the first lessons in our math book.

Science: We took a test over chapter 1.

Social Studies: We had a United States Trivia question session. (This was done for fun not for a grade!)

Spelling: We took a test over unit 2.

English: We did not have English today.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read in a book called Hurricanes and discussed what happened down south at the same time.
In Mr. H's class we did a Tall Tales story about Davey Crockett and did a comprehension worksheet.

Happy first day of September!

We had a busy day today! Here is what we did:

Math: We worked on lesson 20 dealing with writing division problems in three different ways and reading division problems correctly. Problem set 20 was assigned and is due on Friday. We will have a test on Friday.

Science: We reviewed for our test that will be tomorrow on chapter 1. A review assignment of page 30-31 problems 1-11 and 15-20 is due on Friday. We also watched a Bill Nye video on invertebrates as a review as well.

English/writing: We had a review assignment dealing with sentences, subjects and predicates. The paper is due tomorrow.

Spelling: We turned in our spelling workbook pages. We will take our final test on Friday.

Social Studies: We continued our discussion of chapter one that dealt with climate. Students are to read page 40-43 for tomorrow.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class and in Mr. H's class we did our first writing prompt today. This is a timed writing just like on the ISTEP. This first prompt is used as a baseline for us to know what we need to work on this year.
