Happy last day of January!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we took a test over what we have learned so far.

Science: Today we watched a Bill Nye video over pressure. We also went over the study guide for the test that will be on Wednesday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to work on our rough draft as well as visiting the computer lab. The rough draft is due on Wednesday.
In Mr. H's class we read from The City of Ember pages 14-26.

Social Studies: We continued the video on 100 greatest Americans.

Spelling: We took a pretest and we were assigned the workbook pages 128-131 that are due on Thursday.

English/Writing: We did a writing sheet dealing with Mae Jemison.

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed square roots and reducing fractions. The students had a lot of practice in reducing. Problem set 90 was assigned and is due on Tuesday. We will have a test over the items previously taught.

Science: We reviewed for our test that will be on Wednesday. The students have a study guide.

Social Studies: We read pages 210-215 discussing the middle colonies.

Spelling: Unit 21 here are the words: broken, frighten, specialize, organize, shaken, fertilize, awaken, realize, loosen, summarize, criticize, forgotten, modernize, stolen, generalize, memorize, frozen, civilize, flatten, straighten. We wrote our words five times each. The pretest will be on Tuesday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we began a writing project using a unique picture. Ask your child how their rough draft is going. The rough draft is due on Wednesday.
In Mr. H's class we began The City of Ember a wonderful Young Hoosier book.

English/Writing: We did a writing prompt dealing with making up three new rules for the school.

Happy Friday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today in math we talked about translations, reflections and rotations or slides, flips and turns. We did an in class activity to demonstrate these transformations. NO PROBLEM SET TODAY!

Science: Mrs. D's class watched a Bill Nye video on properties of matter.

Spelling: We took a test over unit 20.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we did a readers theater read through together and we worked with our first grade buddies.
In Mr. H's class we finished Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Social Studies: We watched a video over the top 100 people from the last 100 years.

English/Writing: In Mr. H's class a paragraph correction sheet was done. In Mrs D's class we did a writing prompt.

Happy Thursday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed dividing fractions. This concept was demonstrated using manipulatives. The algorithm was then shown and as a reminder of how to multiply by the reciprocal a student was "flipped" upside down. Ask your student about this! Problem set 87 was assigned for Friday.

Science: Today we discussed mixtures and solutions. Worksheet 113 was assigned and is due on Friday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read "Mom's Best Friend" and answered the first five questions at the end of the story.
In Mr. H's class we read Mr. Popper's Penguins pages 80-100.

Social Studies: We read about Triangular Trade from the old text books. We also worked on a map dealing with the explorers.

Spelling: Today we turned in our workbook pages and our test will be on Friday.

Happy Wednesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed multiplying fractions and whole numbers. Problem set 86 was assigned and is due on Thursday.

Science: We discussed phase changes, salts, and freezing and melting points. For homework the students needed to complete worksheet 112 and answer checkpoint questions on pages 355-357 and due to the fact that we could not get working they needed to give main idea of each paragraph on page 356.

Social Studies: We discussed pages 190-199 dealing with New England Colonies.

Reading: In Mrs.D's class we took a test over Maniac Magee. We also turned in our assignments for this book.

In Mr. H's class we read from Mr. Popper's Penguins pages 56-80

English/Writing: Paragraph correction worksheet and pen pal letters.

Spelling: The workbook pages for unit 20 are due on Thursday and test on Friday.

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we took a test over items previously taught.

Science: Today we finished discussing lesson 2 dealing with

Social Studies: We discussed up through page 193 dealing with early colonies.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we finished Maniac Magee. The students were to have the following completed by tomorrow: Diary Entries with cover, Fortunate and Unfortunate events page, Character relationship paper, AR test complete. We will take a written test over this book on Wednesday.

In Mr. H's class we read from page 57- 73 Mr. Popper's Penguins.

English/Writing: We worked on Pen Pal letters.

Spelling: We took a pretest today and the workbook pages 122-125 were assigned and are due on Thursday. The final test will be on Friday.

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed capacity and converting units. Problem set 85 was assigned and due on Tuesday. We will have a test on Tuesday as well.

Science: We discussed lesson 3 dealing with the Periodic Table. The three questions at the end of the lesson were assigned and are due on Tuesday.

Social Studies: We discussed pages 188-191 dealing with the Massachusetts Colony.

Reading: Today we had the book swap so that took a big part of our time. In Mrs. D's class we discussed that Maniac Magee is due to be completed by Wednesday.

In Mr. H's class we read from Mr. Popper's Penguins.

English/Writing: We had a writing prompt dealing with our favorite room.

Spelling: Unit 20 is what we are using this week. Here are the words: dishonest, incomplete, imperfect, nonfiction, unequal, incorrect, dislike, nonstop, unsure, disagree, inactive, nonviolent, unbutton, impolite, disobey, impatient, nonsense, unknown, impossible, informal. We wrote our words five times each today and will have a pretest tomorrow.

Math: Today we discussed finding Mean, Median, Mode and Range. Problem set 84 was assigned and is due on Monday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read chapters 39-42 in Maniac Magee. A diary entry is due on Monday.
In Mr. H's class we read from Mr. Popper's Penguins up to page 43.

Social Studies: We looked at and discussed Time For Kids.

Spelling: Today we had a test over unit 19.

English/Writing: We did a writing prompt dealing with picking television shows.

Happy Thursday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed geometric solids. Problem set 83 was assigned and is due on Friday.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read chapters 36-38 in Maniac Magee and we have a diary entry due. We also began working on a character web dealing with the relationships in the book. Ask your child how the Butterscotch Krimpets were today!

In Mr. H's class we read chapters 1 and 2 from Mr. Popper's Penguins. We also did a writing activity dealing with this book.

Spelling: The workbook pages were due today and we will have a test over unit 19 tomorrow.

Science: Today we finished lesson 1 on density and we began lesson 2 dealing with elements and the make up of an atom. We also did an experiment on buoyancy.

Social Studies: We began chapter 5 dealing with the new colonies. Pages 182-193 were assigned to be read

English/Writing: We did a paragraph correction sheet and we did a writing sample.

In Mr. H's we are beginning Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Spelling: Workbook pages are due tomorrow!

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed reducing fractions and finding Greatest Common Factors. Problem set 82 was assigned and is due on Wednesday.

Science: We continued our discussion of matter, density and mass. Lesson 1 of Chapter 11. The students had a worksheet discussing what this lesson was about that is due on Wednesday.

Social Studies: Today we continued the discussion of Martin Luther King Jr.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we read chapters 28-32 in Maniac Magee. We had a short quiz and discussed yesterday's assignment. We also had a diary entry that is due on Wednesday.

In Mr. H's class we finished Early Sunday Morning and had a discussion of the book.

English/Writing: We had a writing prompt about people being the same.

Spelling: Today we took a pretest over unit 19. The workbook pages 116-119 are due on Thursday and we will have the final test on Friday.

***Last chance to bring in Book Swap books is Thursday!

***We have an inservice on Wednesday so the students will be dismissed at 12:20.

Happy Monday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we did an investigation dealing with graphs. We talked about bar graphs, histograms, stem and leaf plots, pictographs, circle graphs, and Venn diagrams.

Science: Mr. G our student teacher began his first lesson on Matter and it's properties. The students did an experiment dealing with volume, mass and density. The students used balances to find density.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to read and discuss Maniac Magee. We had a short quiz over what we were to have read. We also worked on doing some predictions and on some vocabulary. We are to have read through chapter 27 by Tuesday.

In Mr. H's class we read form Early Sunday Morning pages 118-130.

Social Studies: We watched a video and discussed Martin Luther King Jr.
Spelling: Unit 19 is this weeks list. Here are the words: Ohio, Maine, Alaska, Iowa, Texas, Nevada, Montana, Florida, Alabama, Maryland, South Carolina, California, Washington, New York, North Dakota, Colorado, Massachusetts they were also to pick three states of their own. We wrote these words five times each and will have a pretest on Tuesday.

Happy Thursday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed prime and composite numbers. We completed a hundreds chart with the first 25 prime numbers circled. Problem set 80 was assigned and is due on Friday. We will have a test on Friday.

Science/Health: Today we discussed exercise and how it effects our bodies. We had two activities to complete dealing with this topic. They are due on Friday.

Social Studies: Today we did an open book quiz over the early colonies such as Jamestown.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued with Maniac Magee and the students were to write a paragraph telling about a nickname that they have or would like to have. We read chapters 13-18 and had another diary entry.

In Mr. H's class we continued to read from Early Sunday Morning pages 66-81 and we also had a comprehension worksheet.

Spelling: Workbooks were due today and the test will be on Friday.

English/Writing: We did an activity with adjectives that compare. We also did a writing prompt where the students chose one of four subjects to write about.

Happy Wednesday!

FYI: Mrs. D now has a student teacher and you should have received a note from him yesterday in the red folders. This should be a great semester for all of us.

Here is what we did today:

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we continued to read from Maniac Magee chapters 7-12. We took a quiz over yesterday's reading and discussed what happened so far. We also continue to write a diary entry after each reading assignment.

In Mr. H's class we continued to read Early Sunday Morning pages 60-66. This is a Dear America book detailing the life of a young girl during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We also had a comprehension worksheet

Math: Today we discussed equivalent fractions. Problem set 79 was assigned and is due on Thursday.

Spelling: We had our pretest today and the workbook pages 110-113 are due on Thursday with the final test on Friday.

Science/Health: Today we discussed being a health consumer. We had a worksheet dealing with cause and effects as well.

Social Studies: We are in the process of sketching or drawing a colonial community. A sample of this is found on page 160-161 in our textbooks.

English/Writing: We had a paragraph correction sheet and we began to write to our pen pals.

Happy Tuesday!

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed exponents and writing numbers in expanded form. Problem set 78 was assigned and is due on Wednesday.

Science/Health: Today we discussed taking care of your teeth, eyes and ears. We had a worksheet number 19 that covered what we discussed and is due on Wednesday.

Spelling: Unit 18 is a review unit and we will be taking a test on Friday and the workbook pages are due on Thursday.

Social Studies: We discussed Plymouth Colony. Page 166-168 in our textbooks.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we began the story Maniac Magee we read the first six chapters. We will be keeping a daily diary as if we were the main character in the story. The first entry was assigned for Wednesday.

In Mr. H's class we continued to read Early Sunday Morning up through page 60.

Here is what we did today:

Math: Today we discussed multiplying fractions. The students were assigned problem set 76 and it is due on Friday.

Spelling: We will have a spelling test over list 17 tomorrow. Workbook page 106 was assigned today and due on Friday. Here are the words:
chorus, create, suitcase, cereal, recent, practice, company, expect, jacket, frantic, choir, grocery, recite, celebrate, exercise, correct, comic, select, plastic, stomach.

Reading: In Mrs. D's class we discussed vocabulary and read the story Mariah Keeps Cool from our reading books.

In Mr. H's class we began the story Early Sunday Morning pages 1-15.

Science/Health: Today we began health chapter 3 discussing Keeping Healthy and Fit. We talked about keeping our skin, hair and nails healthy today.

Social Studies: We began talking about Jamestown pages 160-164.

English/writing: We discussed adjectives and did the activities on page 234.
